Liberty Public Schools utilizes a research-based, student-centered coaching model (Sweeney, 2013, 2010) to support teachers in designing learning experiences that are targeted, differentiated, and aligned with Missouri Learning Standards and Expectations to maximize student achievement.
Student Centered Coaching
Together, coaches and teachers:
- Set a standards-based goal for student learning.
- Create a set of learning targets that are based on the standard(s).
- Utilize student evidence to plan differentiated instruction.
- Co-teach using effective teaching practices.
- Document student and teaching learning across a coaching cycle.
- Schedule coaching based on learning cycles.
- Work in partnership with the school leadership.
Liberty Public Schools’ innovation and learning coaches operate on the foundation that student learning is the guiding focus. Innovation and Learning coaches offer continual and relevant support through sound partnering practices. These practices include, but are not limited to, conversations, observations, co-teaching, reflections, and collaborative planning. A trusting relationship between coach and teacher is paramount to ensure teachers are empowered to guide their instruction based on student needs.
Innovation & Learning coaches partner with teachers through a diverse and flexible schedule to support teachers and/or administrators through the school improvement goals designed to enhance student performance. All coaches will make their weekly schedules accessible for teachers and staff in the buildings they serve.
Because coaching is student focused and students have different needs, our coaching staff has diverse experiences in supporting students in their K-12 journeys. Partnering with a coach is a practice we encourage all teachers to explore. This collaborative experience is about building a teacher’s pedagogical prowess and is worthwhile whether teachers are in their first year of teaching, last year of teaching, or anywhere in between.
Specifically, our coaching team includes new teacher coaching to support our first and second year teachers in creating a classroom experience that is engaging and student-centered. Our Innovation & Learning Coaches support the critical foundational skills developed during the elementary grades, infusing both traditional and digital teaching strategies to meet the needs of our 21st Century learners through partnerships with teachers to improve student achievement.
