3 LPS Students to Be Recognized by Northland Symphony Orchestra

The Northland Symphony Orchestra Association (NSOA) is thrilled to congratulate Kayla Nelson, the first-place winner of this season's Young Artist Competition!

Kayla Nelson

Kayla is a senior at Liberty North High School, where she plays French Horn in the Wind Symphony. She has participated in the Missouri All-State band since her freshman year, earning first chair her junior year. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy in the summer of 2023 and is looking forward to growing her musicianship at Luzerne Music Center over the summer of 2024.

Kayla studies privately with David Sullivan, acting principal horn in the Kansas City Symphony. Kayla plans to major in horn performance in college, aspiring to perform professionally in a major symphony orchestra. Outside of music she enjoys being outside and hanging out with friends.

Natalie Coleman

Also, congratulations to Natalie Coleman on her second place finish in this season's Young Artist Competition! Natalie is a rising senior at Liberty North High School.

She has been studying viola for eight years, initially with Carl Cook, then more recently with Jessica Nance. She has been a member of the Northland Youth Symphony, the Youth Symphony of Kansas City, and the Missouri All-State Orchestra. Outside of orchestra, her interests include singing, painting, running long distance, and math, and she hopes to pursue a double major in math and music in college.

The NSOA also wants to take a moment to congratulate Gillian Calder, this season's Young Artist Competition third place finisher!

Gillian Calder

Gillian is a senior at Liberty High School. She has played double bass for 7 years and has studied with James Albright and Richard Ryan. Her musical achievements include performances with the KC Metro All-District Orchestra and the Missouri All-State Orchestra. Gillian enjoys playing piano and organ and dancing ballet with Luzicka Ballet.

For the NSOA Young Artist Competition, she performed the first movement of Bottesini’s Concerto No. 2.

Liberty Public Schools is proud to be home to all three of the top Young Artist Competition performers.

Kayla Nelson will perform with the Northland Symphony Orchestra in their concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at North Kansas City High School. 

Natalie Coleman and Gillian calder will also be recognized at the concert.

Fine Arts logo

Several Liberty Public Schools students are being recognized for their fine arts talents. Dozens of students will be representing the district as members of the All-State Band, Orchestra, Choir, Children's Choir and All-State Theater performance.

Incumbents Karen Rogers and Dan Currence were the only individuals to apply, meaning that with two positions available, there will not be a need for an election in April.
