Krystal Rasmussen Named 2026-2027 LPS District Teacher of the Year

Krystal Rasmussen Named 2026-2027 LPS District Teacher of the Year

Liberty Public Schools is proud to announce that Kellybrook Elementary music teacher Ms. Krystal Rasmussen has been named the 2026–2027 Liberty Public Schools Teacher of the Year. The surprise announcement took place in the Kellybrook Elementary library Monday afternoon, April 27, 2026, where district leaders, family, and friends gathered to celebrate Rasmussen’s outstanding contributions to students, staff, and the broader school community.

Immediately following the announcement, the celebration continued with an all-school parade, as students and staff filled the halls to honor Rasmussen’s achievement, an energetic and joyful tribute befitting a teacher known for bringing music and positivity into every corner of the building.

Rasmussen joined Liberty Public Schools in August 2023 and has served as the music teacher at Kellybrook Elementary. In just a short time, she has made a lasting impact through her dynamic teaching style, creative performances, and commitment to building a strong sense of belonging through music.

"Krystal is an exceptional teacher whose love and passion for teaching music shines through in everything she does," said Kellybrook Elementary Principal Dr. Jerrod Fellhauer. "Her ability to inspire students is evident in the amazing performances she leads, creating meaningful experiences that students will carry with them long after they leave her classroom. She is a true team player, consistently supporting her team, colleagues and bringing thoughtful insight while serving on the building leadership team."

A self-described “military brat,” Rasmussen grew up moving between five states on Air Force bases. Through each transition, music remained her constant, a source of comfort, connection, and identity. That lifelong passion ultimately guided her to a career in music education.

Today, music continues to shape both her professional and personal life. Her husband, Dan Rasmussen, is also a music teacher in Liberty Public Schools, and together they are raising their two children in a home where music is central to family life.

“Being named Teacher of the Year means so much to me,” Rasmussen said. “It reflects the impact that positivity and music have in our building. My goal every day is to spread joy, build confidence, and create a sense of belonging for our students and staff. This recognition celebrates the connections we continue to grow together.”

Rasmussen credits her inspiration to become a teacher to her mother, Becky Thurm, whose energy and joy for life continue to influence her daily, as well as a high school choir director who helped her realize the powerful impact educators can have on their students.

Known for her enthusiasm and creativity, Rasmussen has led memorable student performances ranging from large-scale recorder ensembles to lively kindergarten showcases. She also actively connects students with the broader community through performances at local events, including singing the national anthem at sporting events and organizing neighborhood caroling. Her students regularly participate in opportunities beyond the classroom, such as honor choirs and statewide music programs.

Colleagues and families alike appreciate Rasmussen’s positive energy, collaborative spirit, and dedication to making every moment in the classroom meaningful. Whether transforming music class into an interactive, movement-filled experience or encouraging students to discover new talents, she creates an environment where all students can thrive.

Liberty Public Schools congratulates Ms. Rasmussen on this well-deserved honor and celebrates the lasting impact she continues to make across the district.
