Deb Caywood Named 2019-2020 LPS Teacher of the Year
Deb Caywood In a surprise all-school assembly, EPiC Elementary 5th Grade Teacher Deb Caywood was announced as the 2019-2020 Liberty Public Schools District Teacher of the Year on Friday morning, April 19, 2019.
Ms. Caywood has served as a teacher for 22 years, the past 5 serving as a 5th grade teacher at EPiC Elementary.  She has taught in LPS since August 2008, serving as a 5th grade teacher at Alexander Doniphan Elementary (2008-2011) and Shoal Creek Elementary (2011-2014), prior to coming to EPiC.  According to EPiC Principal, Dr. Michelle Schmitz, the learning opportunities in Caywood's class are endless.
"She strongly believes that students need the chance to see themselves as members and leaders of our community," Schmitz said.  "She is always giving her students the opportunity to think outside the box with various projects she leads that truly make a difference for all."
Parents of children that have been under Caywood's guidance also point to the many unique learning opportunities she offers her students, including a classroom garden that supports a community hunger initiative, along with a Global Cardboard Challenge in which students create projects with proceeds used to support local charities.
"Every day, Mrs. Caywood creates an atmosphere and activities that are both innovative and supportive," said EPiC Parent Cori Black.  "Her class activities not only challenge the students academically, but personally."
Caywood now advances to represent Liberty Public Schools at the state level.  Regional Teacher of the Year finalists will be announced later this spring, with a state winner crowned later this year.
