The announcement was made inside a packed gym at Kellybrook as students and staff gathered for the all-school assembly on Friday afternoon, April 14, 2023. Ms. Smith originally joined the LPS family back in 1990, and has served in several capacities over the past three decades, including paraprofessional, substitute teacher, ISS teacher, and her current position as a school social worker.

 

"Wendy goes above and beyond each day, night, summer....ALL the time," said Kellybrook Elementary Principal Dr. Andrea Wilson. "She is a 24/7/365 support for our families. From gathering groceries, finding housing, helping with finances, securing daycare, and meeting emergent needs, Wendy is all things to everyone in need. Nothing gets better than Wendy Smith."

 

To go with her commitment and passion of helping all of those in need, Ms. Smith is the epitome of someone who brings a positive attitude with her each and every day, according to Director of Special Programs Jessica Meisenheimer.

 

"Her smile lights up the room and her positivity is contagious," said Meisenheimer. "She thinks creatively and will not leave any resource untapped to ensure families have what they need to thrive. She is so deserving of this recognition!"

 

This is the twelfth year of existence of the LPS Support Employee of the Year program, which was put in place in 2011. Ms. Smith became the second social worker to be named District Support Employee of the Year, as Carolyn Morris was the recipient of this honor in 2012. Ms. Smith also became the first District Teacher or Support Employee of the Year recipient from Kellybrook Elementary.

 

"Today is not only a day to recognize and celebrate Ms. Wendy Smith, but to lift up and celebrate the nearly 900 support staff that serve Liberty Public Schools every day." said LPS Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Tucker. "The stories shared about the service Ms. Smith provides our students, families, and staff are inspiring, and we can't think of a better person to be recognized for this honor."
