LHS Student Performs at Sydney Opera House
Liberty High School Junior Timothy Heil performed at the Sydney Opera House in Australia over the summer as part of the Honors Performance Series.
Heil auditioned for the prestigious series on trombone in the fall of 2022 via video.
He was selected as a finalist and traveled across the world for the performance on Friday, August 4, 2023.
Students in the Honors Performance Program spent two days sightseeing around Sydney with their families before embarking on two eight-hour days of rehearsals.
Douglast Droste, Director of Orchestral Studies at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music, worked with the band.
In total, 200 finalists were selected for the Honors Performance Series. They were divided between a young adult choir, a high school choir, a high school orchestra and a high school band. Each group had the opportunity to perform several pieces at the Sydney Opera House.
The teens and young adults represented 46 U.S. states and 13 countries.
After the performance, Heil and his family traveled to Cairns and visited the Great Barrier Reef.
"It was a fantastic opportunity for Tim to meet and perform with talented students and conductors from across the world," his mother, Dianne Heil, said. "Tim grew as a musician and broadened his appreciation for travel and other cultures. A huge thank you to the directors at LHS for providing Tim the opportunity to submit an audition for this wonderful experience."
